Life expectancy in Spain has doubled in only 4 generations
SPAIN IS ONE OF THE COUNTRIES WITH THE LONGEST LIFE EXPECTANCY FROM BIRTH, WITH AN AVERAGE OF 85 YEARS FOR WOMEN AND 79 FOR MEN. IT CONTINUES TO INCREASE AT A RHYTHM OF THREE AND A HALF MONTHS TO FOUR MONTHS A YEAR.
Over the past 100 years, life expectancy of people born in Spain has increased by more than 40 years. This means double the life span of the era when your great grandparents were born. Double the life span! The increase is spectacular.
There isn’t only one reason that explains this growth, which maintains a stable rhythm of 3.5-4 months each year. However, it is more a combination of multiple social, economic, health, demographic or epidemiologic factors to explain this evolution. Without a doubt, one of the most important factors had to do with the great reduction of the infant mortality rate at the beginning of this period and, in the last few years, the improvements are concentrated above all on the increase of life expectancy in older people. These improvements are related to the actions to control and treat cardiovascular diseases, one of the most common causes of death in Spain and other similar countries.
Furthermore, the fact that people are more and more conscious of the need to enjoy life to its full, without thinking about age, and are prepared for a process of active ageing, allows us to continue living emotions that increase our life experience.
Where is the limit? Well…that depends…if we continue at this rate, and we continue to make progress on biomedical applications, it’s possible that the babies that are born to day could live up to an average of 100 years of age or even more. There are people who think that if we have gained 40 years in the last 100, what stops us from gaining a further 40 more in the next century? There are already people who live more than 100 years, even some geographic areas with a high number of 100-year-old people. Recently, an Indonesian citizen was given the title of the oldest man in the world at 145 years old, something that can be seen on his identity card which states his date of birth as the 31stof December 1870. When they asked him about the secret of his longevity, he said “the recipe is simply patience”.
Certainly, this helps, however, the true recipe is much more simple than it may seem. At the end of the day, all the conclusions and evidence from the studies state the same: eat half as less, walk double the amount and laugh three times more can be the perfect mix of elements to have a long, healthy and happy life.
These elements are also in our favour in Spain: where the rich Mediterranean diet is good for your body, where the scenery encourages you to walk and get lost in the local culture, where you can dive into the history or enjoy deep-rooted traditions, and where you will always find happy people with a desire to live life to its full. It is no longer a secret recipe and it shouldn’t be kept only for ourselves. For this reason, more and more people from the countries in the north of Europe continue to visit us each year, and even choose the Costa del Sol as a place to live for long periods and enjoy new emotions as part of a new period in their lives.
