Some advantages of drinking red wine

IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN SAID THAT A MODERATE CONSUMPTION OF WINE IS BENEFICIAL FOR YOUR HEALTH. DISCOVER SOME OF THE EFFECTS OF RED WINE THAT WILL SURPRISE YOU.

Wine, together with beer, are drinks that are intimately associated to the history of humanity and have marked tradition and culture in different ways all over the world. For centuries wine has been said to possess magical or curative properties. However, it has only been during recent decades when it has been possible to scientifically prove the beneficial effects of a moderate consumption on our bodies.

Wines exclusively comes from the fermentation of the grape, and it is therefore a product of the transformation of vegetable matter through the use of yeast. The final result is around 85% water, more or less 10% alcohol which is produced as a product of the fermentation of the sugars from the grape, and small proportions of other compounds such as organic acids, flavonoids, tannins and phenols. It is this combination that is responsible for the positive added effects of enjoying a good glass of wine. Water contains salt minerals and trace elements that the grapevine absorbs from the ground as it grows and that add a special characteristic to the wine according to the area where it comes from. With the evidence available today, it shouldn’t surprise us that a lot of doctors recommend introducing red wine as part of a healthy and balanced diet. However, you have to be careful, this medical prescription should not be used as an excuse: a healthy consumption is one glass a day. Drinking more than this could be counterproductive or even produce opposite effects.

DISCOVER FIVE SURPRISING EFFECTS OF WINE:

  1. Wine is associated to longevity.  A moderate and regular consumption of red wine is one of the common factors that have been identified in areas of the world with a high number of people who have reached one hundred years of age. The secret could be behind a substance with antioxidant properties that is present in wine, called resveratrol, which has the potential to treat and prevent some illnesses associated with ageing.
  2. It prevents cardiovascular diseases. It is one of the most known effects of red wine. It prevents the formation of bad cholesterol and its accumulation in the lining of the blood vessels and improves the circulation of good cholesterol. It also has an anticoagulant and antithrombotic effects and it helps to balance blood pressure.
  3. Wine can naturally increase physical performance. The key is also in the resveratrol, which can contribute and increase heart function and muscle power and therefore physical performance through training. This does not mean that you should drink before training, but simply introduce a moderate consumption of wine into a healthy diet.
  4. It can act as protection against certain types of cancer. A glass of red wine a day reduces for example the possibility of developing prostate cancer and can help to slow down the growth of some tumour cells (in the lungs for example). In general terms, it acts as a protective agent, preventing mortality for different reasons.
  5. It helps to combat bacteria. The antimicrobial effects of some of the wine compounds can help to fight against the bacteria and microbes that cause acne. It also helps to improve oral hygiene.
  6. It helps to maintain an agile mind. This has nothing to do with losing your inhibitions, but more to do with the protective effects of increasing the blood flow to the brain which reduces the risk of mini-strokes and maintains mental capabilities and functions. It has also been proven to contribute to reducing the risk of suffering from depression.
